Practical Info

Travel Tips

Everything useful before and during the trip. Click each category to expand.

🚂
Trains & Getting Around
  • Book Trenitalia or Italo tickets in advance — high-speed trains sell out fast in June.
  • Validate regional train tickets before boarding at yellow machines on the platform.
  • Bologna → Florence: ~35 min by Frecciarossa. Florence → Rome: ~1h 30 min.
  • For the Pisa day trip: Pisa Centrale is well connected to Florence Santa Maria Novella.
  • Taxis are metered — use the FREE NOW or Uber app to confirm fares in advance.
🎫
Museums & Reservations
  • Uffizi and Accademia (David): book online months in advance — queues are brutal in June.
  • Vatican Museums: book a morning slot to avoid peak crowds; allow 3–4 hours minimum.
  • Colosseum: timed-entry tickets are mandatory and sell out fast.
  • Most Italian state museums are free on the first Sunday of the month.
  • Keep digital tickets in Apple or Google Wallet in case you lose mobile signal.
👶
Stroller & Family Tips
  • Bologna's covered porticoes are great for shaded, stroller-friendly walking.
  • Cobblestones are everywhere — a light, compact stroller is far easier than a bulky one.
  • Most Italian restaurants welcome children; dining before 7 pm means fewer crowds.
  • Many piazzas have fountains — bring a ball or bubbles for easy toddler entertainment.
  • Rome: the Prati neighbourhood near the Vatican is flat, walkable, and very family-friendly.
📱
Apps & Connectivity
  • Google Maps offline maps: download Bologna, Florence, and Rome before you fly.
  • Trenitalia app for train tickets and live departure boards.
  • TheFork for restaurant reservations — works well across all four cities.
  • Get an EU eSIM or Italian SIM for affordable data (TIM, Vodafone IT, or Iliad).
  • Many churches require covered shoulders and knees — pack a lightweight scarf.
🧳
Luggage & Airports
  • Luggage storage at major stations: Deposito Bagagli, around €6–8 per bag per day.
  • Bologna Marconi Airport: 15 min by Marconi Express shuttle to the central station.
  • Rome Fiumicino: Leonardo Express to Roma Termini every 15 min, roughly €14.
  • Travel light if you can — stairs and cobblestones make heavy bags a real challenge.
